Oily skin resists the signs of ageing for longer but excessive oil can impact on skin health.
Many people think that their skin is oily and Therapists will often have a tough time in convincing a client that stripping their skin is not the best approach.
Healthy microbes on your skin consume excess oil so these beneficial bacteria need to be nurtured. Genuinely oily skin tends to show slight thickening with open pores. Make-up does not hold well and blackheads, blemishes and congestion are common.
- Always maintain the acid mantle – use pH balanced products (pH 4,5).
- Avoid stripping the skin of natural barriers; so avoid products that contain alcohol or harsh detergents. Clay based masks and cleansers are recommended to draw out congestion and to gently exfoliate.
- Ensure that you drink at least 250 ml of water per day for each 10 kg of body mass – e.g. if you weigh 60 kg then you need to drink 1.5 litres per day.
- Some types of contraceptive pill use high levels of androgens and it may be worth investigating alternative pills based on oestrogen.
